Our ancestors came to America from Germany during the 1700s.

Our DNA tells us that we are related to the Stettler family of Switzerland.

At least one Stutler fought in the Revolutionary War and voted in the first presidential election.

A Stutler fought in the War of 1812, and several fought in the Civil War.

One of our ancestors was said to have been a Native American.

Proud of our history? You bet!

The photos below show a direct line from John Stutler through eight generations of Stutler males. This lineage is also marked by a red dot in the chart below. Tests of members of different Stutler branches indicate our Y chromosome DNA has remained unchanged through at least the last eight generations.

Notes:

I have omitted personal information of living persons (other than myeself) to respect their privacy.

Document research and DNA testing has traced this family tree back to the 18th century to John Stutler of Harrison Co, Virginia (present Doddridge Co, West Virginia, where Stutlers can still be found).

Oral tradition indicates John Stutler's father was also named John, and came from Germany. DNA test comparisons suggest we can further trace our roots to Switzerland which shares a border with Germany. Read about the various theories plus the DNA test results in the article The Stutler mystery.

There were apparently two John Stutler's serving in the Revolutionary War, one from Harrison Co, and another from Fincastle Co, so some of the data on John Stutler in the chart above may actually apply to the other John Stutler.

I did some microfilm research in the 1980s while I was living in America, but most of the information here came from other web sites, so this is largely an informal compilation of data from other people's research which I have not personally documented. The links at the bottom of this page include my internet sources, where you can find documented information.

In several cases below more than one name or date has been recorded for the same person or event, so I included the extras in parentheses, but this does not imply that the data in parentheses carry less weight. In some cases the year of birth in parentheses affects the order of birth among siblings. In one case it actually determines who was the first born.

  • 1784 - Monongalia and OH Counties merged to form Harrison Co., Virginia
  • 1845 - Harrison, Tyler, Ritchie and Lewis Counties merged to form Doddridge Co., Virginia
  • 1863 - The region of Virginia which contained Doddridge Co. seceded from Virginia and became West Virginia

Are you a Stutler?

Do you have questions or additional data? Any Photos of the people mentioned above? I'd love to hear from you. Please e-mail me at russ@russellstutler.com

I have created a few Stutler logos in several colors for use on products (mugs, shirts, caps). They definitely make great gifts for Stutler family members -- and nobody else. Just click on these images to go to Zazzle.
